Protect your child with the Airport Watch List in Australia. Learn when it applies, how to apply, and get full support from our experienced family lawyers.
What is the Airport Watch List?
A system enabling parents to place a child's name on the Australian Federal Police database, preventing unauthorised departure from Australia.
When can a child be placed on it
Where a court has issued an order or injunction limiting or preventing the child's travel; an application is pending before the court seeking travel restrictions; or an order or injunction restricting overseas travel is under appeal.
How to apply, and how to be removed
Complete an Airport Watchlist request form and either file a court application seeking travel limitations or obtain a court order that includes the request. Removal generally requires a further court order demonstrating previous concerns have been resolved, after which the Australian Federal Police update their records.
Why a child might need to be listed
Concerns about unauthorised overseas removal, custody or decision-making disputes, welfare protection during unresolved matters, and ensuring only authorised international travel occurs.
Conditional vs absolute listing
Absolute orders prevent all travel; conditional orders allow a parent to provide authenticated consent (a statutory declaration) for defined periods.
What happens at the airport, and checking the list
Airport processes include identity verification, consent checking, database cross-checking, identity investigation for aliases, and enforcement notification. You can check the list by completing an Airport Watchlist Enquiry Form with certified government ID and submitting it to the Australian Federal Police.
